 -  With the holidays approaching, it's easy to forget the importance of taking time out to relax and read at least a couple of good books.  This edition of Southern Literary Review is designed to help you decide what you want to read if you ever do treat yourself to a day by the fire sipping hot cocoa, and help you choose books for a lot of different personalities on your Christmas list this year.

We have a lot of new things on the site, including interviews from two of my favorite southern writers and some great new selections. Some are back from last year's holidays, and others are brand spankin' new!

State-of-the-Month ~ Texas

Did you know?

  • Texas is the only state to have the flags of 6 different nations fly over it. They are: Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederate States, and the United States.

  • The King Ranch in Texas is bigger than the state of Rhode Island.

  • Texas comes from the Hasinai Indian word tejas meaning friends or allies.

  • The Aransas Wildlife Refuge is the winter home of North America's only remaining flock of whooping cranes.

  • The land area of Texas is larger than all of New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois combined. It extends 801 miles from north to south and 773 miles from east to west.

 See SLR's Texas page.

Next month, Kentucky!  Thank you to everyone who voted on the spotlight state.
