Greetings from Oxford,
Mississippi! It's nearing
the end of August and so I'll return to Cambridge,
Massachusetts in time for fall but as always I will miss Oxford--the people, the smiles, the pace and my friends who
love to tell and hear a good story as much as I do.
This edition of Southern
Literary Review is going to be a particular treat for those of you
looking for entertaining fiction by some of the South's best.
Fannie Flagg has a new novel out
and she has returned to
Elmwood Springs, Missouri. The characters have developed
beautifully in Can't Wait to get to Heaven and so
reacquaint yourself with them or meet them for the first time.
Tom
Franklin's new novel, Smonk, is wonderfully written, but quite violent and not
for everyone so be sure to read our review before purchasing.
I talked to one of the finest up and coming novelist
around--Darnell Arnoult. Talking with her reminded me that southern
literature starts with a southern upbringing in a southern family.
I think you'll enjoy what she has to say about the her writing
process, fiction in general, and the ever-changing face of the
South.
I hope our suggestions and reviews help you find a few good books to
read in the next couple of months. You can always contact us
at,

Coming in October!
A new addition to
the Southern Breeze Bookstore is currently underway.

the most neighborly state in the union, bordered by 8 states.
-
In 1865 Missouri became the first
slave state to free its slaves.

St. Louis is also called, "Home
of the Blues".
-
Situated within a day’s drive of
50% of the U.S. population, Branson and the Tri-Lakes area
serves up to 65,000 visitors daily. Branson has been a "rubber
tire" destination with the vast majority of tourists arriving by
vehicles, RVs and tour buses. Branson has also become one of
America’s top motor coach vacation destinations with an
estimated 4,000 buses arriving each year.
Next
issue, Mississippi! Thank
you to everyone who voted.
