 July/August 2005 Newsletter

reflections | updates | featured state

 - Looking over SLR's picks in this newsletter, one may notice a lighter side of literature in our selection. Being Dead is No Excuse reminded me of my own grandmother's funeral and how she had written out plans before she died.  In her plans, she explained who should bring what dish to the fellowship after the service, who should sing what songs and other such details.  Sometimes she looked over her plans and said, "Oh, I wish I could be there."  (We followed them to a tee.)  I liked this little cookbook.  It has a lot of great southern recipes and good stories that are likely to put a smile on your face--whether you're a southern or not.

We included Dr. Clayton Sullivan's Why Beulah Shot Her Pistol in the Baptist Church for two reasons--it is well written, and entertaining as are all the novels selected. Even with all the foul language in Junior Ray, the language is loose, fluid.

We also have some great bargains in the Southern Breeze Bookstore that we found for you and some fabulous selections for Summer with a special emphasis on antiques.

State-of-the-Month ~
Georgia

Georgia is home to some of the south's most noteworthy authors.  Some of our most memorable stories have been set in Georgia.  The first that author that often comes to mind is Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind.  Then Flannery O'Conner came along and took the short story to a new level mastering the art of Southern gothic.  Contemporary authors like Louise Shaffer, and Cynthia Shearer hail from Georgia.

Did you know?

  • Saint Marys, Georgia is the second oldest city in the nation.

  • Georgia was named for King George II of England

  • Wesleyan College in Macon was the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women.

  • Cumberland Island National Seashore contains the ruins of Dungeness, the once magnificent Carnegie estate. In addition, wild horses graze among wind swept dunes.

  • Georgia is the nations number one producer of the three Ps--peanuts, pecans, and peaches.
